Week 2

This week has been much harder than the previous one. Studying search engines was time consuming as I had to look through them thoroughly to find out the truth: to gooogle or not? The answer is: Yes, in most cases. Actually, I was surprised to learn that there are so many search engines and websites including search engines. For example, I discovered some useful ones like http://www.biography.com/ and http://www.gutenberg.org/.

The second thing I had to struggle with was writing the ABCD objectives. This theory is new for me and at first I didn't have a clear picture what to do, what to start with. This theory is quite general and I didn't know how to apply it for my class. Thankfully MengFeng and Elena were the first ones to post their objectives which helped me a lot.

The next task was to describe my course and students for the Final Project. It wasn't difficult because I just described my work, my students' needs, the technology I have access to. I started to think about my final project. What do I want to do? What will my students accept? Will it make my lessons more effective? I have already told them that they would have to take part in the Internet project. They've got interested, though some of them worry about lack of time as they have a lot of homework to do in other subjects. I hope most of them will enjoy the project and we'll continue doing it after our course is over.

The last thing I have to do is to write this post. I think it's a good idea to reflect on what you have done. I understand that I have learnt a lot. Though, it's not the last one. Now I'm going to visit my dear colleauges' blogs. I'm in anticipation of good reading!

I'd like to thank all the visitors to my blog for their comments full of support and encouragement.

  1. Dear Tatsiana ,

Thank you for your kind words. You introduced a great work this week. When I read your reflection , I felt that I read mine. Because I found the same difficulties as you. When I tried to write about search engines I didn't know how to start.I also found it difficult to write objectives using ABCD, as I didn't use to use this theory before. So I waited to learn from my friends.Follow your blog from the interface of my blog.

I wish you a good luck

  2. Hi tatsiana,

I have just read your post and your feelings are not very far from mine. I'm overwhelmed by the number of search engines which are available on the internet, but I still think google.com is the best although many of them (it's unfortunate I couldn't open all of them - lack of time) are very resourceful.

As regards the setting of objectives, I am not particularly used to that exercise as all the textbooks we use for our teachings ahev preset objectives that we have to bow to. However, webteaching starts with the teacher setting his own objectives especially in the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) which should be student-centered, so what we have learned here is very useful.

  3. Hi Tatsiana: There is a lot that can be learned from "early posters." But sometimes if an early poster is doing something not quite right, the problem can also be reduplicated.

One strategy is to wait for one or two early posters, then see what comment I may have given, and try to learn from that exchange. Usually I cannot keep up with *all* of the task or project step posts (I do respond to all eventually), but the first few ones I try to repsond to quickly so that others can read and learn how I am trying to shape their work. -Robert

  4. Dear Tatsiana

It has been nice experience to go through your reflective posting on the learning experience of week 2 in our Web Skills course. I have got some similarities between our learning experiences. I am also amazed to see that there are many web search tools which could be utilized for preparing our ELT lessons. I have also found that the URL http://www.biography.com/ has been helpful and it might be used to develop my students reading skills. A.B.C.D. model of writing objectives and Bloom’s revised Taxonomy have been a new experience for me. Truly speaking, I am habituated with the traditional method of composing objectives for my lesson. From now on, I am expecting to compose my lesson objectives following the A.B.C.D. model.

To tell you honestly, I have been worried about my final project. I have already specified my class. Like you, I also told the very class my interest in using new technology with them as an extension of class work and home task. They seem to be much excited. But I am confused with the way I should go to introduce it in my class. I might need your assistance in designing my final project task.

I hope to go through your more reflective postings in the coming days.

    Regards,
    Nahid

    1. Hi Nahid,

Thank you very much for your comment. I see that many of us have similar perception of what is going on here. I have some thoughts and doubts about my final project. I will be glad to help you if it is in my competence. And I hope I will be able to turn to you for advice as well.

  5. thanks tatsiana for your later post, I read your comments and I realize you are making a lot of effort with the course. I also get some trouble with ABCD learning objectives but you know, you seems to be a very good teacher so in the future ot won`t be a problem for you and I will put my hand on fire on that. Excellent work and keep in the same way you are now. Thanks again and see you.
